PC gaming is largely synonymous with keyboard and mouse control, particularly for genres like first-person shooters and strategy games that demand precision. However, some PC games are surprisingly better suited to controllers. Reflex-based movement and fast-paced melee combat often benefit from a gamepad's intuitive controls. Similarly, many console-originating franchises, now ported to PC, retain a controller-centric feel.
While many PC releases offer keyboard and mouse support, certain titles truly shine with a controller. This is especially true for games where precise aiming isn't paramount, but responsive, fluid movement is key. Many genres, especially those with roots in console gaming, are naturally better experienced with a gamepad.
The recent release slate (as of January 7, 2025) includes titles like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Infinity Nikki, Marvel Rivals, Path of Exile 2, and Delta Force, which generally perform better with keyboard and mouse. While Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver 1&2 Remastered offers a slight improvement with a gamepad, the difference isn't drastic.
Several upcoming PC releases show promise for controller use:
- Freedom Wars Remastered: A PS Vita port echoing the Monster Hunter formula, likely best played with a controller.
- Tales of Graces f Remastered: The Tales series consistently performs better with gamepads, and this remaster is expected to follow suit.
- Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: Given the predecessor's controller-friendly design on PC, Rebirth's similar combat system suggests a preference for a gamepad.
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2: A typical PS5-to-PC port, likely optimized for controllers first, though keyboard and mouse should still function well.
A 2024 Soulslike game has also been added to this list. See below for details.
