Simu Liu, the Marvel star, is attempting to revive the cancelled Sleeping Dogs film adaptation. Newsweek reports Liu responded to a fan on X/Twitter, stating he's actively working with rights holders to bring the game to the big screen.
The project, initially announced in 2017 with Donnie Yen attached to star, was seemingly abandoned a year later and recently confirmed cancelled by Yen himself. Yen cited years of work, personal investment, and the unpredictable nature of Hollywood as reasons for its demise.
Liu's intervention offers a glimmer of hope for fans of the critically acclaimed 2012 video game. The original game, released on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, follows detective Wei Shen as he goes undercover within a Hong Kong Triad. Its positive reception (earning an 8/10 from IGN) contrasted sharply with the lack of sequels. Whether Liu's efforts will be successful remains uncertain.
