The Burning Monolith: Path of Exile 2's Endgame Challenge
The Burning Monolith, a unique map location in Path of Exile 2's Atlas of Worlds, resembles a Realmgate and is found near the starting area of your mapping journey. However, accessing it is far from straightforward.
Unlocking the Burning Monolith
Accessing the Burning Monolith, the lair of the endgame pinnacle boss, Arbiter of Ash, requires three Crisis Fragments. These are obtained by completing the three Citadels (Iron, Copper, and Stone), exceptionally rare and challenging map nodes within the Atlas. Attempting to activate the Monolith's door initiates the "Pinnacle of Flame" quest, with sub-quests for each Citadel: Ezomyte Infiltration (Iron Citadel), Faridun Foray (Copper Citadel), and Vaal Incursion (Stone Citadel). Successfully completing these Citadels yields the necessary Crisis Fragments. Once you have all three, place them on the altar within the Burning Monolith to unlock the Arbiter of Ash encounter.
Prepare for a Brutal Encounter
Be absolutely certain your character build is optimized before facing the Arbiter of Ash. This pinnacle boss is the game's most formidable, boasting devastating attacks and millions of hit points.
Locating the Elusive Citadels
Finding the three Citadels—Iron, Copper, and Stone—is the primary hurdle. Each Citadel features a unique map boss, whose defeat grants a Crisis Fragment. The challenge lies in their unpredictable location on the randomly generated Atlas. While there's no guaranteed method, players have suggested several strategies:
- Directional Exploration: Choose a direction on the Atlas and systematically explore until you locate a Citadel. Utilize Towers to gain a broader view of the map.
- Corruption Tracking: Focus on map nodes showing corruption, often found at the Atlas's edges. Clear these nodes, unlock nearby Towers, and repeat. This can be combined with the directional approach.
- Clustered Appearance: Anecdotal evidence suggests Citadels tend to appear in groups. Finding one may increase your chances of discovering the others nearby.
Citadel hunting is a late-game activity, best undertaken with a fully optimized build and significant boss-killing experience.
Alternative Acquisition
Crisis Fragments can be purchased from online trading sites or the in-game Currency Exchange. However, their rarity commands a high price, making this a viable alternative to the arduous hunt.
