Hello fellow gamers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Roundup for August 29th, 2024! Today's update is packed with new releases, forming the core of this Thursday's column, as usual. We'll also dive into a substantial list of new sales – and that's pretty much it for today. We can't have a Nintendo Direct every day, right? Let's jump into the games!
Featured New Releases
Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club ($49.99)
The Famicom Detective Club returns after a long hiatus, bringing a new case to solve. This new entry stays true to the original games, both in its strengths and weaknesses. Expect a fresh mystery and a presentation reminiscent of the recent Switch remakes. Will you crack the latest serial murder case? My review is coming soon!
Gundam Breaker 4 ($59.99)
Mikhail's already provided an in-depth review, so I'll point you there for a complete breakdown of the gameplay and Switch performance. In short: build and battle Gunpla! While the Switch port understandably lags behind other versions in performance, it's still a satisfying experience. Check out Mikhail's excellent review for all the details.
Shadow of the Ninja – Reborn ($19.99)
Tengo Project continues its impressive streak of remakes and re-imaginings. Following successful updates to Wild Guns Reloaded, The Ninja Saviors, and Pocky & Rocky, they've now tackled an 8-bit classic. Expect a more significant departure from the source material than in their previous projects. If you crave classic-style action-platforming, this is a strong contender. My review drops early next week.
Valfaris: Mecha Therion ($19.99)
A Valfaris sequel, but with a twist! This is a 2.5D side-scrolling shooter, a departure from the original's gameplay. While the genre shift might surprise some, it offers plenty of fun. Another game I'll be reviewing shortly!
Nour: Play With Your Food ($9.99)
I'm not entirely sure what's going on here, but the food visuals are stunning. You'll be playing with food… somehow. Photography? Secret hunting? I might need to enlist Mikhail to investigate this one further.
Monster Jam Showdown ($49.99)
Monster trucks! If that's your jam (pun intended!), this game offers local and online multiplayer, multiple modes, and more. Reception on other platforms has been mixed, but monster truck fans have limited options.
WitchSpring R ($39.99)
I believe this is a WitchSpring remake, but I could be wrong. The original filled a niche as a mobile alternative to Atelier games. At this price point, however, it's closer to a full-priced Atelier title, which makes it a tougher sell. Still, it's the best-looking WitchSpring yet.
Depths of Sanity ($19.99)
An underwater exploration game with a fantastical horror twist. You'll search for your missing crew in a dangerous, interconnected underwater world. Combat is involved. It's well-regarded on other platforms and should appeal to Switch fans of exploratory action.
Voltaire: The Vegan Vampire ($19.99)
A vegan vampire rebels against his bloodthirsty father! This farming sim with action elements sees Voltaire fending off his dad's attempts to derail his new lifestyle. I'm a bit fatigued by the genre, but if you're up for some farming and fighting, give it a look.
Marble Abduction! Patti Hattu ($11.79)
A marble roller game with 70 stages and 80 marbles to collect, plus secrets and challenges. If you enjoy fast-paced marble rolling, this one delivers.
Leo: The Firefighter Cat ($24.99)
A kid-friendly firefighting game with 20 missions. While other firefighting games on Switch aim for realism, this one might appeal to younger players.
Gori: Cuddly Carnage ($21.99)
A grotesque action game starring a hoverboarding cat. The core gameplay is solid, but the Switch version suffers from performance issues. Consider this if you're not overly sensitive to framerate dips.
Arcade Archives Finalizer Super Transformation ($7.99)
A 1985 Konami vertical shooter featuring a transforming robot hero. It's a charming, old-school shooter with a unique twist.
EGGCONSOLE Xanadu Scenario II PC-8801mkIISR ($6.49)
An early expansion pack featuring a new underworld to explore. Gameplay is similar to the first game, but more challenging. Notable for featuring the debut work of legendary composer Yuzo Koshiro.
The Backrooms: Survival ($10.99)
A blend of horror, survival, and roguelite elements. Best experienced with up to ten online players, though solo play caters to a specific audience.
Can of Wormholes ($19.99)
A clever puzzle game where you, a sentient tin can, must deal with worms. One hundred well-designed puzzles keep things fresh.
Ninja I & II ($9.99)
Two NES-style microgames with a ninja twist. Local multiplayer or CPU competition are the options here.
Dice Make 10! ($3.99)
A surprisingly fun puzzle game with two modes: falling blocks and wood block placement. The goal is to create rows or columns adding up to ten.

That's it for today, folks! We'll be back tomorrow to wrap up the week with more new releases, sales, and news. Possibly some reviews. A major typhoon is passing through, so there's a slight chance I might miss tomorrow's update. We'll see. Have a great Thursday, and thanks for reading!
