Reviews & Mini-Views
Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)
Konami's recent track record with classic game collections has been undeniably impressive, and the Castlevania franchise has been a particular beneficiary. Castlevania Dominus Collection, the third in the series on modern platforms, focuses on the Nintendo DS trilogy. Developed by M2, it delivers their usual high standard of quality. However, this collection offers more than initially apparent, potentially making it the most essential Castlevania compilation to date.
The Nintendo DS Castlevania games hold a unique place in franchise history, with both positive and negative aspects. On the plus side, the trilogy boasts distinct identities, creating a surprisingly diverse set of experiences. Dawn of Sorrow, a direct sequel to Aria of Sorrow, suffers from some early DS touchscreen limitations, thankfully mitigated in this release. Portrait of Ruin cleverly integrates touchscreen elements into a bonus mode, utilizing an interesting dual-character mechanic. Order of Ecclesia significantly alters the formula, featuring increased difficulty and a design reminiscent of Simon's Quest. All three are strong titles; arguably even great. Highly recommended.
Conversely, this marked the end of the era of exploratory Castlevania games helmed by Koji Igarashi, whose work revitalized the series with Symphony of the Night. With diminishing returns, Konami shifted focus to MercurySteam's Lords of Shadow. Looking back, it's clear the decision was questionable. Were the distinct game designs a result of IGA's creative exploration, or a desperate attempt to recapture audience interest? The answer remains elusive. Many felt fatigued by the Castlevania formula at the time, and even despite my enthusiastic day-one purchases and extensive playtime, I shared a sense of stagnation. Sometimes, you don't appreciate something until it's gone.
Interestingly, these aren't emulated but rather native ports, allowing M2 to implement improvements. The frustrating touchscreen controls in Dawn of Sorrow are replaced with more intuitive button presses, and the display now includes the main screen, status screen, and map simultaneously. This significantly enhances Dawn of Sorrow, elevating it to a top-five contender in my personal Castlevania rankings.
The collection is packed with options and extras. Players can select game regions, customize button mapping, and choose between left stick controls for character movement or the touch cursor. A charming credits sequence highlights unsung heroes, and a gallery showcases art, manuals, and box art. A music player allows for custom playlists, featuring the series' excellent soundtrack.
In-game options include save states, rewind functionality, customizable controls, screen layout adjustments, background color choices, and audio level control. A comprehensive compendium provides detailed information on equipment, enemies, and items. My only minor criticism is the limited screen arrangement options; a larger play area would be welcome. This is a superb way to experience three fantastic games, offering exceptional value for the price.
But the surprises don't end there! The notoriously difficult arcade title, Haunted Castle, is included. Its omission from the first collection is puzzling, but its presence here is a welcome addition. Unlimited continues are a practically essential option, given the game's brutal difficulty. Despite its flaws, it boasts great music and a stylish opening sequence. However, is it truly irredeemable?
The final, and surprisingly substantial, extra is a complete remake of Haunted Castle. Similar to M2's Castlevania: The Adventure Rebirth, they've essentially created a superior game. Haunted Castle Revisited retains elements of the original while forging its own identity. Essentially, we have a new Castlevania game—a very good one—hidden within a Nintendo DS collection.
Castlevania enthusiasts should undoubtedly purchase Castlevania Dominus Collection. It includes a fantastic new Castlevania game, along with the three excellent Nintendo DS titles in optimal form. The original Haunted Castle is also present. If you dislike Castlevania, well, we can't be friends. And if you're unfamiliar with the series, acquire all three collections and experience the joy for yourself. This is another outstanding collaboration between Konami and M2.

Shadow of the Ninja – Reborn ($19.99)
My experience with Shadow of the Ninja – Reborn has been a mixed bag. I've generally enjoyed Tengo Project's previous releases, considering their versions of Wild Guns and The Ninja Warriors definitive. While I had some minor reservations about Pocky & Rocky, it was still a highly enjoyable experience. Shadow of the Ninja, however, felt different. The team's involvement with the original was limited, and it was an 8-bit game receiving an update rather than a 16-bit one. I also personally find the original less compelling than their other titles. Therefore, I approached this remake with some hesitation.
After a positive preview at last year's Tokyo Game Show, my enthusiasm was rekindled. Having now played it extensively, my opinion is nuanced. Compared to their other work, Shadow of the Ninja – Reborn feels less polished. However, improvements are numerous, including superior presentation and a refined weapon and item system. While no new characters are introduced, existing characters are better differentiated. It's undoubtedly superior to the original while preserving its essence. Fans of the original will adore this remake.
For those who, like myself, found the original merely decent, this remake won't drastically alter that perception. Simultaneous access to the chain and sword is a welcome improvement, with the sword being more practical. The new inventory system adds a layer of depth. The presentation is excellent, masking its 8-bit origins. However, there are some frustrating difficulty spikes, making it arguably more challenging than the original. This might be necessary, considering its relatively short length. It's the best iteration of Shadow of the Ninja, but it's still Shadow of the Ninja.
Shadow of the Ninja – Reborn is another solid effort from Tengo Project, representing their most substantial improvement over a predecessor. Its appeal depends on your feelings towards the original, as the core remains faithful to the NES title. Newcomers will find an enjoyable but not essential action game, retaining an 8-bit design sensibility.

Pinball FX – The Princess Bride Pinball ($5.49)
A quick look at some Pinball FX DLC, celebrating the significant update that has finally made the game properly playable on Switch. Two new tables were released: The Princess Bride Pinball and Goat Simulator Pinball. The former, based on the classic film, includes voice clips and video footage, a welcome inclusion. Mechanically, it feels like a realistic pinball table. Relatively easy to learn, faithful to the license, and satisfying for score-attack enthusiasts.
Zen Studios hasn't always succeeded with licensed tables, often lacking music, voice acting, and likeness. The Princess Bride Pinball is a standout, appealing to fans of the film who enjoy pinball. While not the most innovative, its familiar design choices are fitting. A fun experience for both newcomers and veterans.
SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5
Pinball FX – Goat Simulator Pinball ($5.49)
Goat Simulator Pinball perfectly captures the spirit of its license, resulting in a bizarre and unique table. Its video game-only nature is evident. Players encounter silly goat-related events, using ball effects to trigger table elements. Initially confusing, persistence is rewarded. This table is more suited to veteran players. Goat Simulator fans without pinball experience might struggle initially.
Goat Simulator Pinball is another strong DLC offering from Zen Studios. Its unconventional design is a welcome change of pace. It's challenging to master, but the rewards are worth the effort. Fans of Goat Simulator who persevere will be rewarded with wacky antics.

Bakeru ($39.99)
As detailed in yesterday's review, this charming 3D platformer from Good-Feel is a delightful experience. Play as Bakeru, a tanuki on a mission to save Japan from an evil overlord. Battle enemies, uncover hidden trivia, collect souvenirs, and enjoy the humor. The Switch version's inconsistent framerate might deter some, but otherwise, it's a worthwhile addition to the Switch library.
Holyhunt ($4.99)
A top-down arena-based twin-stick shooter, described as an 8-bit homage, though it doesn't strongly resemble games from that era. It appears fun; shoot, dash, acquire new weapons, and defeat bosses.
Shashingo: Learn Japanese with Photography ($20.00)
While typically avoiding language-learning apps, this one seems more thoughtfully designed. Take photos, learn Japanese names for objects. Personally, I wouldn't spend $20, but it might suit different learning styles.
