As we approach 2025, Overwatch 2 is set to undergo transformative changes that promise to reinvigorate the game's core mechanics and keep players engaged amidst fierce competition from other hero shooters like NetEase's Marvel Rivals. With nearly nine years since the original Overwatch's debut in 2016 and two-and-a-half years since Overwatch 2 launched, the game is gearing up for a significant evolution starting with Season 15 on February 18.
Game director Aaron Keller, along with the Blizzard team, has unveiled a comprehensive roadmap that includes new heroes, collaborations, and a groundbreaking shift in gameplay dynamics through the introduction of hero perks. These changes aim to reignite enthusiasm and draw in both new and returning players to Overwatch 2.
Overwatch 2 is Adding Hero Perks
A pivotal update coming to Overwatch 2 is the addition of hero perks, which will allow players to customize their heroes during matches. Each hero will have the option to choose between two perks at specific levels throughout the game: a minor perk at level two, which can enhance a basic aspect of the hero, and a major perk that can significantly alter the hero's abilities mid-match. For instance, Orisa could see her primary fire refund Heat on critical hits with a minor perk, or replace her Javelin Spin with her Barrier through a major perk. These choices add a strategic layer to gameplay, forcing players to make crucial decisions that could shift the outcome of a match.

Stadium: A New Round-Based Mode with Third-Person
Season 16, slated for April, will introduce Stadium mode, a bold new 5v5, best-of-7 round-based competitive mode. In Stadium, players will earn and spend currency between rounds to modify their heroes, boosting attributes or unlocking major changes to their abilities. Notably, perks will not be available in Stadium initially, but there's potential for their integration in the future. A unique feature of Stadium is the introduction of a third-person perspective, allowing players to view more of the battlefield and their modifications in action. This mode will launch with a core roster of 14 heroes, with plans for expansion.

GOATs are Coming to Overwatch Classic
Blizzard is not stopping at new modes; they're also experimenting with the return of the beloved GOATs Meta in Overwatch Classic, set to launch midway through Season 16. This will bring back the iconic three-tank, three-support composition from Overwatch 1, offering a nostalgic yet competitive twist. Additionally, more seasonal events, including April Fools', Summer Games, and Dr. Junkenstein's Halloween event, are planned to keep the calendar full of exciting content.
Freja Arrives in Season 16 - and Aqua Follows
Season 16 will introduce a new hero, Freja, a crossbow-wielding bounty hunter from Denmark, capable of filling enemies with explosive bolts and using bolas to stop fleeing opponents. Following her, concept art for the next hero, Aqua, was revealed, showcasing his ornate staff and water-bending abilities, promising more diversity in Overwatch 2's hero roster.

Loot Boxes are Back
In a surprising move, Blizzard is reintroducing loot boxes to Overwatch 2. These will be available through the free track of the battle pass and weekly rewards, ensuring they remain accessible without additional cost. A key update is the transparency regarding the contents and odds of loot boxes, providing players with clear expectations before they open them.
Hero Bans, Map Voting, and More are Coming to Competitive Play
Competitive play in Overwatch 2 is set to evolve with Season 15 resetting ranks and introducing new rewards like Galactic weapon skins and special weapon charms. Season 16 will bring hero bans, a feature common in many competitive games, to shake up the meta. Following that, map voting will be implemented to give players more control over their gaming experience.
