In the sprawling world of Project Zomboid, traversing the map on foot is a monumental task. Fortunately, many vehicles remain functional, and if keys are elusive, hotwiring offers a solution. This guide details how to hotwire cars in Project Zomboid.
Hotwiring is surprisingly simple, often just a few button presses. However, prerequisites exist. While not requiring a top-tier build, these conditions must be met:
Hotwiring Requirements:
- Level 1 Electrical & Level 2 Mechanics: Alternatively...
- Burglar Occupation: Selecting this at character creation bypasses the skill requirements.
How to Hotwire a Car:
- Enter the vehicle.
- Access the vehicle's radial menu (default key: V).
- Select "Hotwire" and wait.
Once prerequisites are met, these steps work on any operable vehicle. Hotwiring is automated; after completion, press W to start the engine. Remember, fuel is crucial – ensure your chosen vehicle has gas.
Leveling Electrical and Mechanical Skills:
For non-Burglars, skill progression requires specific in-game actions:
- Electrical: Dismantle electronics (watches, radios, TVs).
- Mechanics: Remove and reinstall mechanical parts.
Books and magazines also boost skills. Check mailboxes, sheds, and bookshelves during looting. Server admins can use the "/addxp" command (check in-game syntax) to directly grant skill XP. Remember to use the appropriate tools (e.g., a screwdriver) for dismantling and repairs. Right-clicking vehicle parts and selecting "Vehicle Mechanics" allows for part removal.
