Marvel Rivals has found itself at the center of a heated controversy following the removal of over 500 mods from the Nexus Mods website within a single month. The situation escalated when modifications that swapped Captain America's head with images of Joe Biden and Donald Trump were taken down, sparking a wave of emotions among users.
The owner of Nexus Mods, known online as TheDarkOne, addressed the issue in a private Reddit discussion. He explained that the decision to remove both the Biden and Trump mods simultaneously was made to prevent any accusations of political bias. "We removed the Biden mod on the same day as the Trump mod to avoid bias. But for some reason, YouTube bloggers are silent about it," TheDarkOne stated.
However, the controversy didn't end with the mods' removal. TheDarkOne revealed that he has since been subjected to death threats and derogatory insults, which he attributes to the ongoing debate over the mods. "Today we write death threats, call us pedophiles and all sorts of insults just because someone decided to stir up this topic," he added.
This incident is not the first time Nexus Mods has faced backlash over the removal of content. In 2022, the platform stirred controversy by removing a mod for Spider-Man Remastered that replaced rainbow flags with American flags. At the time, the site's owners made it clear that they support inclusivity and would not tolerate content that goes against diversity.
In response to the recent uproar, TheDarkOne concluded, "We're not going to waste our time on people who think this is cause for uproar," signaling a firm stance on the matter.
