GameCube Fans Excited by New Nintendo Filings for Switch 2

Nintendo enthusiasts are buzzing with excitement over new filings that hint at a potential GameCube controller designed for use with the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. The filing, as reported by Nintendo Life, includes details of a "game controller" compatible with the Switch 2, believed to be a wireless Bluetooth device. Internet sleuths, particularly from Famiboards, have dug deeper and suggest that one of the images in the filing shows a label location that aligns perfectly with the back of a GameCube controller, specifically behind the C-Stick.

While the device could potentially be a new Switch 2 Pro Controller, current speculation leans towards its integration with Nintendo's Switch Online subscription service. This service already supports wireless classic controllers for retro gaming, leading to speculation that a GameCube library might finally be added to Nintendo Switch Online. Fans have long desired GameCube classics on the Switch, and with Nintendo currently offering titles from NES, SNES, N64, Sega Genesis, and Game Boy, the addition of GameCube games could be a significant enhancement to the service.

Nintendo Consoles

The Nintendo Switch 2 was introduced in January with a trailer that highlighted key features such as backwards compatibility and the addition of a second USB-C port. However, many details, including other games and the function of a new mysterious button on the Joy-Con, were not disclosed. Theories about the Joy-Con, including the possibility of it functioning as a mouse, have been circulating.

Last month, a patent filed by Nintendo suggested that the Switch 2’s Joy-Con controllers could be attached in reverse. The new system reportedly uses gyro mechanics, akin to those in smartphones without screen locks. Unlike the original Switch, which utilized rails for the Joy-Cons, the new controllers employ magnets for attachment, allowing for versatile positioning of buttons and ports. This innovation could lead to novel gameplay mechanics if incorporated into the final product.

Analysts predict that the Nintendo Switch 2 could be priced between $400 and $500, with a potential release in June. Despite the many unknowns, Nintendo has scheduled a Direct presentation for April 2, where more details about the console will be revealed.

While we eagerly await further information, fans can enjoy a taste of GameCube nostalgia with the recently released Metroid Prime Remastered on the current Nintendo Switch.
