"Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Mouse Theory Gains Traction"

Author : Claire Update:Apr 25,2025

After the exciting reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2 this morning, the buzz around using Joy-Con controllers as a mouse is gaining traction. The reveal trailer showcased a captivating moment where a pair of detached Joy-Cons were lowered onto a surface, attachment side down. They connected to a pair of connectors with seemingly flat bottoms and then smoothly slid across the surface, reminiscent of a mouse gliding on a mouse pad. A closer look reveals what appears to be a slider pad on the bottom of one of the connectors, lending further credibility to the mouse-like functionality theory.

Rumors had been circulating prior to the reveal, suggesting that the Joy-Cons might feature an internal sensor similar to those found in computer mice. However, Nintendo has yet to officially confirm these speculations or elaborate on the potential implications. Enthusiasts have speculated that this feature could enhance gameplay in titles like Civilization, which are traditionally more enjoyable with a mouse and keyboard setup. Others believe that, given Nintendo's innovative track record, this could lead to unique applications in their first-party software. The possibilities are still wide open.

While many details about the potential mouse support for the Switch 2 remain undisclosed (including the function of the mysterious new Joy-Con button), we do have some confirmed information. The console is officially named the Nintendo Switch 2, with a release scheduled for 2025. A new Mario Kart game is also in development for the system. The Switch 2 will be backward compatible with the original Switch, and more details about upcoming software will be shared during a Direct in April.
