Ace Attorney Investigations Collection and More Arrive on Switch

Author : Eleanor Update:Jan 17,2025

Hello again, readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for September 4th, 2024! Summer's warmth has faded, leaving behind memories of sunshine and fun. I'm feeling refreshed and ready for autumn, and I appreciate sharing those summer days with you all. Let's dive into today's gaming news: a bounty of reviews, fresh releases, and some tempting sales!

Reviews & Mini-Views

Ace Attorney Investigations Collection ($39.99)

The Nintendo Switch has given us a second chance at many classic games, and now the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection brings us Miles Edgeworth's previously unlocalized adventures. This collection cleverly builds upon previous storylines, making the sequel even more impactful. Experiencing the prosecution's perspective is a welcome change, offering a fresh take on the familiar gameplay. While the pacing can feel uneven at times, fans of the main series will find much to enjoy, especially in the superior second game.

Bonus features include a gallery, a story mode, and selectable graphics/soundtracks. A handy dialog history is also included—a welcome addition to this type of game. The contrast between the two games is fascinating, making this a complete and satisfying package. Now, with this release, every Ace Attorney game (excluding the Professor Layton crossover) is available on Switch!

SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

Gimmick! 2 ($24.99)

A sequel to Gimmick! after all these years is a surprising treat! Developed by Bitwave Games, this faithful sequel stays true to the original's challenging physics-based platforming. The six lengthy levels will push your skills to the limit, but a new easier mode caters to those seeking a less demanding experience. Yumetaro's star remains a versatile tool for both combat and puzzle-solving. New collectibles add replay value, offering customization options.

Expect a tough but rewarding experience, similar to its predecessor. Generous checkpoints mitigate frustration, while charming visuals and music add to the appeal. While not overly long, the game's difficulty and clever level design make it a memorable experience. This sequel is a great addition for fans of the original and challenging platformers alike.

SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

Valfaris: Mecha Therion ($19.99)

Valfaris: Mecha Therion boldly shifts gears from its predecessor's action-platforming to a shoot 'em up style. While the Switch's hardware might struggle at times, the intense action, memorable soundtrack, and creepy visuals still deliver a satisfying experience. The weapon system adds a strategic layer, requiring skillful management of gun energy, melee attacks, and a rotating third weapon.

Despite performance limitations on the Switch, Mecha Therion retains the unique atmosphere of the original. It's a stylish, heavy metal-infused shoot 'em up that avoids common genre pitfalls. While other platforms may offer better performance, the Switch version is still a worthwhile experience.

SwitchArcade Score: 4/5

Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash ($44.99)

This licensed game is undeniably fan service, delivering plenty for Umamusume enthusiasts. The writing is well-done, and the meta-systems reward dedicated players. However, for those unfamiliar with the franchise, the limited selection of mini-games and a story that lacks broader appeal may lead to disappointment. The core gameplay feels repetitive and lacks depth.

Even for fans, the emphasis on fan service may overshadow the overall experience. While the presentation and unlockables are strong points, the limited gameplay will likely lead to short-term engagement.

SwitchArcade Score: 3/5

Sunsoft is Back! Retro Game Selection ($9.99)

This collection shines a light on Sunsoft's lesser-known 8-bit titles. Featuring Firework Thrower Kantaro’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido, Ripple Island, and The Wing of Madoola, this package offers a unique glimpse into the publisher's Japanese heritage. The inclusion of save states, rewind, display options, and a localized experience makes this a worthwhile purchase.

The games themselves are a mixed bag, with some frustrating elements, but overall they offer a charming and nostalgic experience. Fans of Sunsoft and retro gaming will appreciate this collection's unique offerings and careful preservation.

SwitchArcade Score: 4/5
