Apex Legends Battle Pass U-Turn: Respawn Reverses Controversial Changes
Respawn Entertainment has reversed course on its controversial Apex Legends battle pass overhaul following widespread player backlash. The proposed changes, which included two $9.99 battle passes per season and the removal of the 950 Apex Coin purchase option, have been scrapped.
Return to the Standard 950 Apex Coin Battle Pass
In a Twitter (X) announcement, Respawn confirmed the reversal, stating the original 950 Apex Coin premium battle pass will return with Season 22's August 6th launch. The developer acknowledged poor communication surrounding the proposed changes and pledged improved transparency going forward. Respawn reiterated its commitment to addressing player concerns, including anti-cheat measures, game stability, and quality-of-life updates. Season 22 patch notes, detailing stability improvements and bug fixes, are expected on August 5th.
The Controversial New Scheme and its Fallout
The revised Season 22 battle pass system is now:
- Free Pass: Standard free tier.
- Premium Pass: Available for 950 Apex Coins.
- Ultimate & Ultimate+: Paid tiers at $9.99 and $19.99 respectively. (Single payment per season)
This simplified structure stands in stark contrast to the initially announced, heavily criticized system. The original plan, unveiled July 8th, required two separate $9.99 payments for the premium pass—one at the season's start and another mid-season. A premium+ option, replacing the previous bundle, would have cost $19.99 per half-season, sparking intense player frustration.
Community Backlash and Respawn's Response
The negative reaction was swift and widespread, flooding Twitter (X) and the Apex Legends subreddit with criticism. The Steam page for Apex Legends also saw a surge in overwhelmingly negative reviews (80,587 at the time of writing).
While the reversal is welcomed, many players feel the initial proposal should never have been made. The strong response underscores the importance of player feedback in game development. Respawn's apology and commitment to improved communication are crucial steps in regaining player trust. As Season 22 approaches, the community awaits the promised improvements and stability fixes outlined in the August 5th patch notes.
