Localthunk, creator of the popular roguelike poker game Balatro, recently intervened to address growing tensions in the Balatro subreddit regarding moderator statements about AI-generated artwork.
The Controversy Explained
The situation emerged after DrTankHead, a former moderator of both the main Balatro subreddit and a NSFW Balatro community, publicly endorsed allowing AI-generated content when properly labeled. "We will not be banning AI art here, if it is properly claimed and tagged as such," the moderator stated, claiming this stance aligned with publisher Playstack's position.
The developer promptly responded on Bluesky, clarifying that neither Localthunk nor Playstack supported AI-generated imagery. The statement continued in the subreddit: "Neither Playstack nor I condone AI 'art'. I don't use it in my game, and I believe it actively harms all artists. This moderator's actions didn't represent our views."
Policy Changes Implemented
The developer confirmed the moderator's removal and announced new subreddit guidelines: "Effective immediately, we won't permit AI-generated images. We'll update our official rules and FAQ to reflect this policy clearly."
Playstack's communications director acknowledged ambiguity in previous guidelines, noting that phrasing about "unlabeled AI content" may have created confusion. The remaining moderation team vowed to refine these policies moving forward.
The Aftermath
In the NSFW Balatro community, DrTankHead confirmed their removal while suggesting potential compromises like dedicating specific days for non-NSFW AI artwork submissions. One community member responded bluntly: "Please consider taking a break from Reddit."
Industry-Wide AI Debate
This incident reflects broader industry tensions surrounding generative AI - particularly contentious given recent gaming sector layoffs. While some companies continue AI experimentation:
- EA considers AI crucial to operations
- Capcom explores AI-generated environment concepts
- Activision faced backlash for AI-generated Call of Duty assets
The debate continues as developers weigh ethical concerns against technological possibilities, with projects like Keywords Studios' fully AI-generated game serving as cautionary tales about current limitations.
