The release of Baldur's Gate 3's highly anticipated Patch 7 has ignited a modding frenzy. The community's response has been explosive, with an incredible number of mods being downloaded almost immediately.

Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke announced on Twitter (X) that over one million mods were installed within 24 hours of Patch 7's September 5th launch. "Modding is pretty big," he stated. This figure was quickly surpassed, with mod.io founder Scott Reismanis reporting over 3 million installs and counting.

This surge in modding activity is largely due to Patch 7's inclusion of Larian's official Mod Manager. This integrated tool simplifies the process of browsing, installing, and managing community-created mods directly within the game.

Prior to Patch 7, modding tools were available as a separate Steam application. These tools utilize Larian's Osiris scripting language, allowing modders to craft custom stories, scripts, and even perform basic debugging. Mods can be published directly from the toolkit.

Expanding Modding Horizons: Cross-Platform Compatibility

PC Gamer highlighted a community-created "BG3 Toolkit Unlocked" (by modder Siegfre on Nexus) which unlocks a level editor and reactivates previously restricted features within Larian's editor. While Larian initially limited access to its development tools, stating they are "a game development company, not a tools company," the overwhelming community response has clearly demonstrated the potential.

Larian is actively developing cross-platform modding support, a significant undertaking given the complexities of ensuring compatibility across PC and consoles. Vincke confirmed that PC support will come first, with console support following later to allow for thorough testing and troubleshooting.

Beyond modding, Patch 7 delivers a refined gaming experience with UI improvements, new animations, expanded dialogue options, bug fixes, and performance enhancements. With future updates planned, Larian's commitment to modding, particularly cross-platform capabilities, is evident.
