Clair Obscur: Expedition 33: A Turn-Based RPG Inspired by Classics
Sandfall Interactive's upcoming turn-based RPG, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, is generating significant excitement. Drawing inspiration from the Belle Epoque era of France and classic JRPGs, the game uniquely blends turn-based combat with real-time elements.

The game's creative director, Guillaume Broche, recently discussed the influences behind Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. He cited a desire to create a high-fidelity turn-based RPG, noting a gap in the market for such a title. He specifically mentioned Atlus' Persona series and Square Enix's Octopath Traveler as stylistic inspirations.

The gameplay features a unique combat system. While actions are input in a turn-based manner, players must react in real-time to enemy attacks. This dynamic approach draws comparisons to titles like Persona, Final Fantasy, and Sea of Stars.
Broche emphasized the significant influence of the Final Fantasy series, particularly entries 8, 9, and 10, on the game's core mechanics. However, he clarified that it's not a direct imitation but rather a reflection of his personal gaming history and tastes. The Persona series influenced aspects like camera movement and dynamic menu design.

Exploration in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 offers complete character control, allowing players to switch between party members seamlessly and utilize unique traversal abilities to solve environmental puzzles. The game's narrative centers on preventing a mysterious antagonist, the Paintress, from unleashing death once more. The unique environments, such as the gravity-defying Flying Waters, promise a visually stunning and engaging experience.
Broche expressed his surprise at the overwhelmingly positive reception to the game, hoping players will experiment with diverse character builds and strategies. The development team aims to create a game that resonates deeply with players, echoing the impact classic JRPGs had on them.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is slated for release on PC, PS5, and Xbox in 2025.
