James Gunn and Peter Safran have confirmed that The Brave and the Bold will introduce a new Batman to the DC Universe, definitively ruling out Robert Pattinson. During a DC Studios presentation, Safran and Gunn clarified that Pattinson will remain exclusive to Matt Reeves' The Batman Epic Crime Saga. Gunn stated unequivocally, "It's certainly not the plan...No," regarding Pattinson's inclusion in the broader DCU. Safran added, "We love him, but we've got to introduce a Batman into the DCU. That's imperative. And so that's the plan with The Brave and the Bold."
Earlier speculation about Pattinson's potential crossover stemmed from Reeves' own comments leaving the possibility open. However, Reeves has emphasized his focus on his own saga, stating, "What’s been great is there was a story that I wanted to tell...and James and Peter have been really, really great about that and they’re letting us do that." He further noted uncertainty about the future, prioritizing The Batman Part 2. Safran expressed enthusiasm for Reeves' vision, noting the encouraging aspects of the script for The Batman Part 2, though acknowledging it's yet to be finalized.
The Brave and the Bold is currently in active development, with the storyline progressing well. While Andy Muschietti was initially attached to direct, Gunn and Safran are actively developing the script, intending to present it to Muschietti when ready to gauge its suitability. Further announcements regarding The Brave and the Bold are promised soon.
The previously announced delay of The Batman Part 2 to October 1, 2027, creates a five-year gap between Pattinson's debut and the sequel. Regarding the potential release window for The Brave and the Bold, Safran only confirmed an October 2027 release for a Batman film, remaining tight-lipped about specifics.
Although fans must await The Brave and the Bold for Gunn's interpretation of Batman, a brief glimpse of the character appeared in Creature Commandos Episode 6, showing a silhouetted Batman observing Doctor Phosphorus. Gunn explained the deliberate lack of detail, opting for a more generic portrayal to avoid premature reveals. This cameo, however, confirms Batman's pre-existing presence and established notoriety within the DCU, eliminating the need for an origin story. Gunn further hinted at a future team-up between this DCU Batman and Superman, stating, "This is the DCU Batman...He's the most popular superhero in the world and I can't wait for people to see more of him, along with Superman, and together.”
