David Fincher and Brad Pitt are set to collaborate once again, this time to bring a sequel to Quentin Tarantino's "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" to life. According to reports from The Playlist, the duo is working on this project for Netflix, further strengthening Fincher's ongoing partnership with the streaming service. The currently untitled sequel will see Brad Pitt reprising his role as the stuntman Cliff Booth.
The script for this sequel is an evolved version of Tarantino's previously shelved project, "The Movie Critic," which was initially considered to be his final film. Tarantino, keen on not letting the story go to waste, has entrusted Fincher with the screenplay. Netflix has reportedly acquired the script for $20 million, with a planned budget of $200 million. Filming is scheduled to begin in California in July, just three months away. While no other casting details have been confirmed, it's noted that Leonardo DiCaprio will not be returning as Rick Dalton. Both Fincher and Pitt are prioritizing this project over all others.
Deadline has confirmed The Playlist's report, adding that Pitt received Tarantino's blessing to share the script with Fincher, leading to this unexpected development.
"Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," released in 2019, has been celebrated as a significant achievement in Tarantino's filmography. The sequel, however, faces the challenge of living up to its predecessor, which concluded with a definitive and impactful ending. The world of the original film has been further explored in Tarantino's 2021 novelization, which delves deeper into the 1960s California setting and sheds light on Cliff Booth's mysterious past, including the question of whether he killed his wife.
As anticipation builds for the sequel, fans can revisit Tarantino's thoughts on "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" and how it compares to his other works. Additionally, our original review of the film awarded it a 7.8 out of 10.
