Get ready, Guardians—Bungie has just unveiled an exciting lineup for its sci-fi shooter, Destiny 2, under the banner of "Year of Prophecy." This year promises four major content releases, including two paid expansions and two significant updates accessible to both paying and free players.
Kicking off the year is "Rite of the Nine," a free update that introduces a fresh take on dungeon diving. This update is already available to all players and features familiar dungeons like Prophecy, Spire of the Watcher, and Ghosts of the Deep. Even seasoned players can look forward to unique twists, reintroductions to Orin, and refreshed dungeon weapons.
Next up, on July 15, comes the new paid expansion, "Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate." This expansion marks the beginning of a multiyear saga centered around the mysterious and powerful beings known as the Nine. Players will encounter new ally Lodi and Warlock Vanguard, Ikora, on the new destination, Kepler. Inspired by Destiny 2’s dungeons, Kepler offers puzzle-solving and pathfinding challenges, encouraging deep exploration and player-driven discovery. Expect new enemies, weapons, gear, and destination-specific abilities.
Simultaneously on July 15, major core game innovations will be introduced. These include revised armor and gear systems for enhanced buildcrafting, and a new activity selection screen called the Portal. Players can choose between Fireteam Ops, Pinnacle Ops, Crucible Ops, and the new Solo Ops. Fireteam and Pinnacle Ops focus on cooperative content, while Solo Ops cater to players seeking short, self-contained gameplay sessions. Additionally, 50 new modifiers will allow for deeper gameplay customization, and curated activity rotations will keep the game fresh.

Following "The Edge of Fate," the second major update, "Ash & Iron," will launch on September 9, alongside the second expansion, "Renegades," on December 2. The year will conclude with the "Shadow & Order" major update on March 3.
"Destiny 2: Renegades" draws inspiration from the "legendary Star Wars universe," blending Destiny’s storytelling and gameplay with elements from the iconic sci-fi franchise.
This news comes as a welcome update for Destiny 2 players, especially after Bungie's layoffs of 220 staff members in July 2024, following another 100 layoffs less than a year prior.
In addition to Destiny 2, Bungie is also working on the reboot of their classic franchise, Marathon. Recently, IGN's hands-on preview of Marathon's alpha state suggested it could satisfy the long-unmet demand for Bungie's PvP experience, with a full release planned for September on PC and consoles.
