FFXIV Servers Struggling, Causing Disruption for Players

Final Fantasy XIV North American Servers Suffer Major Outage; Power Outage Suspected

A significant server outage impacted all four North American data centers for Final Fantasy XIV on January 5th, beginning around 8:00 PM Eastern Time. Initial reports from players on social media suggest the outage stemmed from a local power failure in Sacramento, California, potentially due to a blown transformer. Service was restored within approximately an hour.

This incident contrasts with the numerous distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks that plagued the game throughout 2024. DDoS attacks, which flood servers with false information, caused high latency and disconnections. While Square Enix employed mitigation strategies, these attacks proved difficult to completely prevent. Players often utilized VPNs as a workaround to improve connectivity.

The January 5th outage, however, appears to be a distinct issue. Reddit users reported hearing a loud explosion or popping sound in Sacramento, consistent with a power transformer failure, around the time of the outage. This aligns with the reported timing and the fact that European, Japanese, and Oceanic servers remained unaffected.

Square Enix acknowledged the issue on the Lodestone and confirmed an ongoing investigation. At the time of this writing, the Aether, Crystal, and Primal data centers were gradually returning to service, while the Dynamis data center remained offline.

The server problems represent another challenge for Final Fantasy XIV, especially given the ambitious plans for 2025, including the anticipated release of Final Fantasy XIV Mobile. The long-term consequences of these recurring server issues remain to be seen.
