Guerrilla Games' Horizon Multiplayer: A Million-Player Target or a Preemptive Strike?
Guerrilla Games' upcoming Horizon multiplayer game is generating considerable buzz, with recent indications suggesting either incredibly high player expectations or a proactive approach to avoid launch-day server issues.
A recent job listing for a Senior Platform Engineer reveals a requirement for "proven experience building and operating multi-service, 1M+ user globally distributed systems." This strongly suggests Guerrilla anticipates a player base exceeding one million. This could reflect immense confidence in the game's appeal, or a strategic move to prevent server overload akin to the issues experienced by Helldivers 2 at launch.
Since Horizon Forbidden West’s release in 2022 and its Burning Shores DLC, Guerrilla has remained relatively quiet, focusing on collaborations like Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered and LEGO Horizon Adventures. However, evidence of a Horizon multiplayer game has surfaced consistently since 2018 through various job listings.
While the official announcement remains pending, the job listing's emphasis on a million-plus user infrastructure is telling. This scale points towards either ambitious player projections or a cautious approach to ensure a smooth launch, avoiding the server problems that plagued Helldivers 2. The latter is a plausible explanation, given the potential for unexpected popularity.
With the game in development for several years, and a previous job posting hinting at a new Horizon release in 2025, it's highly likely this refers to the multiplayer title. Assuming development is progressing smoothly, a reveal later this year seems increasingly probable.
