You'll first encounter Rompopolo in Chapter 2 during Mission 2-1: Toward Fervent Fields. Upon reaching the Oilwell Basin region on your journey to Azuz City, Rompopolo will make its dramatic appearance. To progress, you must defeat it. Once you've bested Rompopolo at least once, it will be added to your Large Monster Field Guide. You can then engage it repeatedly by exploring the Oilwell Basin or by initiating the "Oilwell Basin Blast" Optional Quest from your Tent.

To prepare effectively for the battle, arm yourself with water-element weapons, ideally obtained from Uth Duna in the Scarlet Forest. Additionally, equip gear with fire resistance, which you can farm from Uth Duna (starting with the belt and greaves) or later from Ajarakan. For added protection, consider crafting a fire-resistance Talisman like Fire Charm I, or a Defense Charm I for general defense. Before heading into battle, remember to grill a meal to boost your health and stamina.
Rompopolo Attacks and Weaknesses

Rompopolo's unique physiology includes saggy skin that inflates with gas, enabling it to launch gas-related attacks that can result in explosions. Be aware that it can also inflict poison status ailments, so keep Antidotes handy. Your Palico can help cleanse most ailments, providing an additional layer of support.
Key attacks to be mindful of include:
- Arm Swipe – Rompopolo will swipe forward twice with its clawed arms. This attack is relatively easy to dodge due to its limited range.
- Lunge With Arm Swipe – Rompopolo charges forward and performs an arcing swipe with both arms.
- Tail Swing – A physical attack where Rompopolo swings its tail at its target.
- Poison Stream or Swipe – Rompopolo may spray a stream of poison gas or charge while swinging its head and spraying poison.
- Oil Explosion – From a distance, Rompopolo uses its tail stinger to inject gas into oil pools, causing them to explode. Dodge to avoid damage.
- Charged Oil Explosion – Later in the fight, Rompopolo will pump more gas into the oil, causing a larger explosion. Dodging is crucial as this attack inflicts significant damage.
Should You Kill or Capture Rompopolo?

As with previous *Monster Hunter* games, you have the option to either capture or kill Rompopolo at the end of the battle. To capture it, you must first weaken the monster until your Palico notes that it looks "tired" (nearly dead). Then, set a Shock Trap or Pitfall Trap and use at least one Tranq Bomb to knock it out, completing the capture.
Both capturing and killing Rompopolo are viable strategies, with the primary difference being the item rewards you can obtain. While the rewards may not differ significantly, certain items may only be obtainable through capture, while others require a kill.
