Keanu Reeves fans eagerly awaiting a sequel to Constantine should know the project faces creative hurdles - the actor reportedly disapproves of current script iterations. Peter Stormare, who played Lucifer in the 2005 original and returns for the sequel, revealed Reeves' reservations in a recent interview with The Direct.
Creative Tensions Behind the Sequel
Stormare explained: "There's considerable back-and-forth because Keanu isn't satisfied with the scripts. The first film initially underperformed but grew into one of cinema's greatest cult classics. Studios now want explosion-filled spectacles - cars flipping through air, elaborate fight sequences - but Keanu wants to maintain the original's spiritual essence."
The veteran actor elaborated on Reeves' vision: "After John Wick, Keanu insists this project should stay true to its roots - a supernatural story about demons and ordinary people. I'd like to portray God appearing similarly to my Lucifer, though twelve years older now."

Resisting Blockbuster Formulas
The creative tension stems from Warner Bros.' apparent desire to Marvel-ize the property, understandable given its DC/Vertigo Hellblazer comic origins. Reeves recently met with DC Studios executives, likely advocating for a more restrained approach.
"The original succeeded because of its substance, not spectacle," Stormare emphasized. "You don't need constant shootouts and wirework that belong in other films. Let Constantine be what it is - audiences responded to that authenticity before and will again."
Production Status
Original director Francis Lawrence remains attached to helm the sequel, though production timelines remain uncertain. Fans hoping for faithfulness to the cult classic's tone will need to wait patiently as these creative differences resolve.
