Killer Instinct Gold Joins Nintendo Switch Online Library

Author : Ryan Update:May 24,2025

Killer Instinct Gold has been added to the Nintendo Switch Online library, bringing the iconic Nintendo 64 game to modern audiences. This title, a port of the arcade classic Killer Instinct 2, joins the original Killer Instinct in the growing collection of retro games available to Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack subscribers.

Originally released in 1996, Killer Instinct Gold was crafted by the renowned British studio Rare, which was a staple second-party developer for Nintendo during that era. Rare's portfolio includes beloved titles like Donkey Kong Country, Goldeneye 007, and Perfect Dark. In Killer Instinct Gold, players can choose from a roster of 10 fierce fighters and engage in various game modes, utilizing an arsenal of "hundreds of thousands of moves and killer Combos at your fingertips."

Although Rare and the Killer Instinct franchise are now under Microsoft's ownership, making Killer Instinct Gold an Xbox Game Studios title, its inclusion on the Switch is a testament to the enduring appeal of the series. Since the launch of the Xbox One version of Killer Instinct in 2013, there have been no announcements regarding a new sequel.

View 11 ImagesNintendo Switch Online is a subscription-based service that enhances the Nintendo Switch gaming experience. Subscribers enjoy online multiplayer capabilities, allowing them to connect with friends for competitive or cooperative play. The service also offers access to a vast library of classic Nintendo games from the NES, SNES, Game Boy, Nintendo 64, and soon, the new GameCube libraries with the upcoming launch of the Nintendo Switch 2. A free seven-day trial is available for those interested in exploring the service.

Preorders for the Nintendo Switch 2 opened at the end of April, with the console priced at $449.99. The preorders were met with high demand, as expected. However, Nintendo has issued a warning to U.S. customers who pre-ordered from the My Nintendo Store, stating that release date delivery is not guaranteed due to the overwhelming interest. Despite this, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser expressed confidence to IGN that the company will have enough units to meet consumer demand "through the holidays."
