K-Pop Demon Hunters is now the most-watched film in Netflix history.
According to official Netflix data, K-Pop Demon Hunters attracted 25.4 million new views between August 18 and 24. This brings its total view count to a staggering 236 million since its June debut on the platform.
Even more impressively, the film's audience has remained virtually unchanged for three straight weeks, declining by nearly 0%. This is an exceptional achievement for any movie, even a blockbuster. Deadline notes that its viewership is expected to rise further next week, as the figures for "K-Pop Demon Hunters: The Sing-Along Event" are being combined with the main film's totals.
In July, K-Pop Demon Hunters already became Netflix's most-watched animated film of all time.
The film has now dethroned Red Notice (230.9 million views) to claim the top spot on Netflix's all-time most-watched list. Red Notice is followed by Carry-On, Don't Look Up, and The Adam Project. For the week of August 18-24, K-Pop Demon Hunters led the charts, followed by Night Always Comes (12.3 million views), Welcome to Sudden Death, My Oxford Year, and Home.
For those new to the phenomenon, K-Pop Demon Hunters is a Sony Pictures Animation film that follows Huntrix, a Korean pop trio who secretly work as demon hunters. Their mission is to stop an evil demon king from destroying humanity. IGN awarded the film an 8/10, calling it a "spectacular animated action musical" and praising animator Maggie Kang's "terrific directorial debut."
Netflix is planning a major expansion of the franchise to capitalize on its success. Plans include a live-action remake, a stage musical, sequels, and more, with the streamer reportedly calling it their version of "Frozen." A special sing-along version was released earlier this week, with in-person theatrical events held at select theaters over the weekend.
