Larian Studios, creators of the 2023 Game of the Year, Baldur's Gate 3, have revealed details about a shelved project: a Baldur's Gate 4 sequel.
A Playable Baldur's Gate 4 Was Abandoned
Larian CEO Swen Vincke confirmed in a PC Gamer interview that a BG3 follow-up, already in a playable state, was abandoned. While acknowledging it was a project fans would have enjoyed, the team felt hesitant to commit to another extensive D&D project. The prospect of potentially spending years on revisions led to the decision to pursue original concepts instead.
The decision, according to Vincke, significantly boosted team morale. The studio is now focused on two unannounced projects, described as their most ambitious yet. A planned Baldur's Gate 3 DLC was also abandoned for similar reasons.
Larian's Future Projects
Larian's history includes the Divinity series. While a Divinity: Original Sin sequel is anticipated, Vincke clarified it won't be Divinity: Original Sin 3, suggesting a different direction for the franchise.
Baldur's Gate 3's Future
Baldur's Gate 3 will receive one final major patch in Fall 2024, incorporating mod support, cross-play, and new evil endings.
This shift signifies a strategic move by Larian towards fresh creative endeavors, leaving the beloved Baldur's Gate franchise (for now) to focus on their next generation of games.
