Looney Tunes Shorts Pulled from HBO Max Amid Movie Premiere

Author : Jack Update:May 13,2025

The recent removal of the entire catalog of original Looney Tunes shorts from HBO Max marks a significant shift for Warner Brothers, which has left fans and animation enthusiasts disheartened. Spanning from 1930 to 1969, these shorts represent a golden era of animation and were instrumental in building Warner Brothers' legacy. However, in a move to prioritize adult and family programming over children's content, HBO Max has chosen to remove these culturally significant classics, a decision that underscores a troubling disregard for their historical value.

Deadline reported that this shift in content strategy is part of a broader initiative at HBO Max, which also saw the cancellation of new episodes of Sesame Street at the end of 2024. Despite its long-standing role in childhood education since 1969, Sesame Street fell victim to the same content prioritization. While newer Looney Tunes spinoffs still remain available, the essence and heritage of the original shorts have been lost to the platform.

This decision comes at an ironic juncture, coinciding with the theatrical release of "The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Story" on March 14. Originally commissioned by Max, the film was sold to Ketchup Entertainment after the Warner Brothers and Discovery merger. With a limited marketing budget, the film managed to earn just over $3 million during its opening weekend across more than 2,800 theaters nationwide.

The timing of these moves is particularly poignant given the public outcry over last year's handling of "Coyote Vs. Acme," another Looney Tunes project that Warner Brothers Discovery opted not to release, citing high distribution costs despite the film being fully completed. The backlash was swift and fierce, with star Will Forte labeling the decision as "f—king bulls—t" and expressing his frustration and anger over the studio's choice.

The removal of the Looney Tunes shorts from HBO Max, coupled with the studio's recent decisions regarding its animated films, suggests a troubling trend for the future of animation at Warner Brothers. Fans and creators alike are left to wonder what this means for the legacy of a franchise that has been so integral to the world of animation and entertainment.
