The dream matchup many have longed for – Sonic versus Mario on the silver screen – has sparked considerable fan excitement and speculation regarding a potential Sega and Nintendo collaboration. The vibrant Mushroom Kingdom is juxtaposed with Sonic's signature speed, offering a tantalizing glimpse of what a combined franchise film could achieve.
This concept trailer’s inspiration stems from the phenomenal success of the Super Mario Bros. and Sonic the Hedgehog movie adaptations, which collectively raked in over $2 billion globally. While a true collaboration between Nintendo and Sega’s iconic mascots remains unlikely given their historical rivalry, the very idea has resonated deeply with fans.
In the meantime, audiences can look forward to sequels: “Super Mario Bros. at the Movies 2” slated for 2026 and “Sonic 4 at the Movies” in 2027.
Separately, December saw the unveiling of a partnership between McDonald's, Sega, and Paramount, bringing Sonic to the United States. Following the release of Sonic toys in 2022, fans speculated about a potential collaboration for the third film. This speculation culminated in McDonald's launch of a new Sonic Happy Meal offering in Colombia, featuring twelve unique hedgehog designs. Initially, a US release wasn't considered, but McDonald's subsequently announced its availability in the United States as well. Each Happy Meal includes a special Sonic the Hedgehog 3 toy, a side, a drink, and a choice of Chicken McNuggets or a hamburger.
