A Poll Reveals a Strong Desire for a Minecraft-esque Game

On January 1st, Notch posted a poll asking fans which of two projects he should prioritize: a roguelike/dungeon crawler hybrid or a game reminiscent of Minecraft. The latter option overwhelmingly won, garnering 81.5% of nearly 300,000 votes. This significant response indicates a strong demand for a new game in a similar vein.

In a subsequent post, Notch confirmed his seriousness, stating he had "basically announced Minecraft 2." He expressed his enthusiasm for returning to his passion project and acknowledged the potential financial success. However, he emphasized his respect for Mojang Studios and Microsoft, the current owners of the Minecraft IP. He assured fans that any new project would avoid infringing on their work.

Navigating IP Rights and Creative Challenges

The sale of Mojang and the Minecraft IP to Microsoft in 2014 presents legal limitations. Notch cannot directly utilize the Minecraft brand. He acknowledges the risks associated with creating a spiritual successor, noting the potential for such projects to fall short of expectations. Despite these challenges, he's motivated by fan demand and the potential for another successful game.

While fans eagerly await Notch's next endeavor, they can anticipate other Minecraft-related experiences. A Minecraft-themed amusement park is slated for the UK and US in 2026 and 2027, and a live-action movie, "A Minecraft Movie," is set for release later in 2025.
