Mortal Kombat 2: First Look at Karl Urban's Johnny Cage

Get ready to face off with a new challenger in the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2! We've just gotten our first glimpse of Karl Urban as the iconic Johnny Cage. Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon unveiled a poster showcasing Urban in character, cleverly designed as a faux movie poster for a fictional Johnny Cage film—complete with the over-the-top action you'd expect. Think flaming motorcycles and plenty of swagger.

Mortal Kombat 2 serves as a direct sequel to the 2021 reboot, picking up where Lewis Tan's Cole Young, Hiroyuki Sanada's Scorpion, and Joe Taslim's Sub-Zero left off. Joining the cast are several newcomers, including Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, and Damon Herriman as Quan Chi. Urban's addition as Johnny Cage is sure to electrify fans.

While plot details remain under wraps, the vast lore of the Mortal Kombat video game franchise offers a wealth of potential storylines for the sequel. The first film focused on Cole Young's introduction to the Mortal Kombat tournament and the bitter rivalry between Scorpion and Sub-Zero.

Initially slated for a theatrical release before the pandemic shifted plans, Mortal Kombat premiered on HBO Max. However, Mortal Kombat 2 is set for a theatrical release on October 24, 2025. Our review of the first film awarded it a 7, praising its "spectacular display of blood, guts, and effects-heavy martial arts battles."
