Obsidian's CEO Confirms Smooth Progress on The Outer Worlds 2 and Avowed
Positive Outlook for Obsidian's Upcoming Releases
In a recent YouTube interview with Limit Break Network, Feargus Urquhart confirmed that development on *The Outer Worlds 2* is progressing well. He praised the development team, highlighting their experience with the first game and their dedication to the project. "I'm impressed with the team," Urquhart stated, "We have a lot of people on that game that get it—who have worked on the first one and have been with us for a long time. So I’ve actually been really impressed by it."Urquhart acknowledged the significant challenges faced by the studio, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic and the period following Microsoft's acquisition. Juggling multiple projects, including Grounded and Pentiment, placed considerable strain on the team. He candidly admitted, "We were kind of a crappy developer for about a year, year and a half." At one point, the studio considered halting The Outer Worlds 2 development to focus on Avowed, but ultimately decided to continue all projects.
The CEO recounted the complexities of navigating acquisition, the pandemic, and the simultaneous development of several titles: "We got acquired [in 2018], and we were figuring out how to be acquired, and then Covid happens, and we're trying to get Outer Worlds done, and we're trying to get the DLC done, and we're trying to move Avowed forward, and we want to start again on Outer Worlds 2, get Outer Worlds 2 moving, and Grounded moving, and Josh is working on Pentiment."
Despite these obstacles, Urquhart expressed satisfaction with the results, noting the success of Grounded and Pentiment, and highlighting the promising progress of both Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2. While specific game details remain undisclosed, the recent delay of Avowed to 2025 suggests potential timeline adjustments for other projects.
Since its 2021 announcement, updates on The Outer Worlds 2 have been scarce. Urquhart acknowledged this and the possibility of a launch delay, similar to Avowed. However, he reassured fans that the studio is committed to delivering high-quality games. "We will get there with all these games," he stated. "Are they going to be on the timelines that we originally thought? No. But we’re going to get there, and I think that’s been proven now." Both games are slated for release on PC and Xbox Series S/X.
