Rambo is gearing up for a comeback with a prequel project helmed by Jalmari Helander, director of Sisu and Big Game. As reported by Deadline, Millennium Media is presenting the film—titled John Rambo—at the Cannes market, seeking investment and distribution opportunities.
The Cannes market, an integral part of the Cannes Film Festival, serves as a platform for filmmakers to showcase upcoming projects still in need of funding or distribution partners. Millennium Media, the studio behind franchises like The Expendables and Has Fallen, previously produced 2008's Rambo and 2019's Rambo: Last Blood.
Details about John Rambo's storyline remain scarce, except that it will explore the Vietnam War era, serving as a prequel to the 1982 classic First Blood. Casting has yet to be finalized, and while Sylvester Stallone—the original Rambo—is aware of the project, he is not currently involved, according to Deadline.
The screenplay for John Rambo was penned by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani (known for The Mauritanian and Black Adam), with production scheduled to begin in Thailand this October.
While a Rambo prequel might seem unexpected, Helander's visceral 2023 WWII action film Sisu—essentially transforming John Wick into a grizzled Finnish soldier decimating Nazis during the Lapland War—proves he's more than capable of delivering high-octane action.
