Virtua Fighter Returns: New In-Engine Footage Unveiled
Sega has treated fans to a fresh look at the upcoming Virtua Fighter game, marking the franchise's highly anticipated return after nearly two decades of relative silence. Developed by Sega's own Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the new installment promises a significant visual evolution.
The recently released in-engine footage, first shown at NVIDIA's 2025 CES keynote, isn't actual gameplay. Instead, it's a meticulously choreographed cinematic showcasing the game's refined visuals and combat style. The polished, almost cinematic quality suggests a deliberate artistic direction, more akin to a Hong Kong action film than a typical fighting game recording. This carefully constructed presentation offers a tantalizing preview of what the final product might look like.
A Visual Shift Towards Realism
The video departs from the series' classic hyper-stylized, polygonal aesthetic. The new Virtua Fighter boasts a more realistic visual style, blending elements reminiscent of both Tekken 8 and Street Fighter 6. The iconic character Akira is featured in two distinct outfits, notably deviating from his traditional bandanna and spiky hair.
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio at the Helm
Development is entrusted to Sega's Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, known for the critically acclaimed Yakuza series. This studio's involvement, alongside their previous collaboration on the Virtua Fighter 5 remaster, suggests a commitment to delivering a high-quality and innovative experience. They are also simultaneously developing Sega's ambitious Project Century.
While details remain scarce, project director Riichirou Yamada's earlier comments hint at Sega's ambitious vision for the franchise's future. The company's enthusiasm is palpable, as highlighted by Sega President and COO Shuji Utsumi's declaration during the VF Direct 2024 livestream: "Virtua Fighter is finally back!" This new footage further fuels excitement for the game's eventual release, promising a revitalized Virtua Fighter experience for both longtime fans and newcomers alike. The release of Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown on Steam in January 2025 further anticipates this new entry.
