Remember Shawn Levy's upcoming Star Wars movie? Don't worry, the Deadpool & Wolverine director is still on board, and we've got a reassuring update from the project's writer, Jonathan Tropper. "I am [excited] too," Tropper told Screen Rant about the future film. "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."
The movie remains mostly shrouded in mystery, but we do know it's set after The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy previously clarified its place in the timeline, stating, "That's also in the future... It's all post-[the first] nine. Shawn's is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This positions the film as the first to delve into the era following The Rise of Skywalker.
In the same discussion, Kennedy confirmed that Levy's film will follow the release of 2026's The Mandalorian and Grogu. "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that," she explained. Additionally, it's been reported that Ryan Gosling is set to star in this eagerly awaited project.
Tropper's words hint at progress, suggesting that Levy's film may be closer to realization than fans might think. Nonetheless, patience is required, as the movie won't hit theaters until at least the last quarter of 2026, if not 2027.
Disney hasn't released a Star Wars film since the controversial Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. In the interim, several projects, including one from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, have been canceled. Additionally, a Star Wars movie slated for late 2026 was removed from Disney's calendar in November.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm unveiled three new feature films: a New Republic film directed by Dave Filoni set within his Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi movie led by James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, which will feature Daisy Ridley reprising her role as Rey post-Rise of Skywalker.
The Obaid-Chinoy project has undergone various changes, including the departure of screenwriter Steven Knight, who took over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Despite these shifts, Rey remains a key focus for Disney, with reports indicating her involvement in multiple upcoming Star Wars films.
Disney's Star Wars slate is expanding even further, with X-Men producer Simon Kinberg set to write a new trilogy that is not a continuation of the Skywalker Saga, contrary to earlier reports.
The next Star Wars content to grace screens will be Season 2 of Andor, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with a triple premiere episode, promising fans an exciting continuation of the series.
