EA Ditches the Sequel Model: The Future of The Sims is Expansive, Not Linear

For years, Simmers have anticipated The Sims 5. However, EA is charting a new course, abandoning the traditional numbered sequel approach. Instead, the focus shifts to a continuously evolving "Sims Universe," encompassing updates and expansions across The Sims 4, Project Rene, MySims, and The Sims FreePlay.

EA's New Vision for The Sims Universe

EA acknowledges the enduring popularity of The Sims 4, noting its substantial playtime in 2024 alone. This commitment to The Sims 4 continues with ongoing updates, bug fixes, and quality-of-life improvements—a dedicated team was even formed earlier this year to address technical issues. EA's President, Laura Miele, confirmed The Sims 4 will remain the foundational title for future development.

This new strategy promises more frequent updates, diverse gameplay, cross-media content, and exciting new offerings. Kate Gorman, EA's Vice President, highlighted the shift away from replacing previous titles to expanding the overall universe.

A key component of this expansion is the introduction of Sims Creator Kits. This feature allows players to purchase community-created digital content, directly supporting the game's creators and fostering a vibrant community. EA is committed to fair compensation for these creators, though specifics remain undisclosed for now. The Kits will launch in November across all Sims platforms.

Project Rene: A Multiplayer Sims Experience

While The Sims 5 remains absent, EA has unveiled Project Rene. This isn't a direct sequel but promises a new social, real-time multiplayer experience, a feature largely absent since The Sims Online. An invite-only playtest is planned for this fall, offering a glimpse into the game's multiplayer capabilities.

Gorman emphasized the lessons learned from The Sims Online, aiming to integrate social interaction within the simulation gameplay, blending real players and NPCs.

The Sims Movie: A Cinematic Dive into the Universe

EA confirmed the upcoming Sims movie, a collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios. The film promises to be deeply rooted in the Sims universe, featuring lore and Easter eggs familiar to longtime fans. Margot Robbie's production company is involved, with Kate Herron directing. Gorman confirmed the inclusion of classic elements like Freezer Bunnies and pool ladders, assuring fans of an authentic Sims experience.
