Smash Together, an unofficial dating platform that connected Super Smash Bros. fans, has announced it received a cease-and-desist notice just before launching its open beta.
The app was scheduled to begin open beta testing on May 15 following months of development. On May 13, however, its official account shared a dejected Yoshi meme captioned, "We got cease and desisted." (Spotted by Automaton.)

While the developers did not name the sender, the cease-and-desist is widely assumed to have come from Nintendo, given the app’s focus on Smash Bros. matchmaking.
SmashTogether promoted itself as a "premium dating platform for all kinds of Super Smash Bros. enthusiasts," designed to help players find their "dream Doubles partner—both in and out of the game"—through a specialized algorithm aimed at matching users with their ideal Smash partner.
The app featured options to list your preferred character (or "main"), notable tournament victories, and playful prompts—similar to typical dating apps but with a distinct Smash Bros. flavor. Examples include: "I’m looking for... Someone who can make it out of pools at a major."
Aside from potential copyright and IP issues, the very concept of a dating app centered around Smash Bros. may have been enough to prompt the legal action.
There has been no further update from the SmashTogether team regarding whether they plan to relaunch with a non-Smash Bros. theme. Until then, let's appreciate the restraint shown in this article by making zero "smashing" puns.
