Sony's proposed acquisition of Kadokawa has generated excitement among Kadokawa employees, despite potential concerns about reduced autonomy. This article explores the reasons behind their optimism.
Analyst Suggests Acquisition Benefits Sony More
Sony's confirmed bid to acquire Kadokawa, while still under negotiation, has sparked diverse reactions. Analyst Takahiro Suzuki, in an interview with Weekly Bunshun, suggests the deal primarily benefits Sony. He points out Sony's shift towards entertainment, but its relative weakness in IP creation. Acquiring Kadokawa, with its extensive IP portfolio (including titles like Oshi no Ko, Dungeon Meshi, and Elden Ring), would significantly bolster Sony's content strength.
However, this acquisition could compromise Kadokawa's independence and lead to stricter management. As noted by Automaton West, this could stifle the creative freedom Kadokawa has enjoyed, potentially impacting projects not directly focused on IP development.
Kadokawa Employees Welcome Potential Change
Despite potential drawbacks, Weekly Bunshun reports a positive employee response to the Sony acquisition. Many interviewed employees expressed approval, viewing Sony as a preferable alternative to the current leadership.
This positive sentiment stems largely from dissatisfaction with the current Natsuno administration. A veteran employee highlighted widespread discontent, particularly regarding the handling of a June cyberattack by the BlackSuit hacking group. The attack resulted in a significant data breach, including sensitive employee information, and the perceived inadequate response from President and CEO Takeshi Natsuno fueled employee dissatisfaction. Many hope a Sony acquisition will lead to a change in leadership.
