Sony has tentative plans to re-enter the handheld market with a new portable console

Sony reportedly plans a return to the handheld gaming console market, according to Bloomberg. Long-time gaming enthusiasts will recall the PlayStation Portable and Vita. While still in early development, the potential for a new portable console to rival Nintendo's Switch is being explored.

Bloomberg's report, citing sources familiar with the matter, suggests a new portable console is in its initial stages. However, this is far from confirmation; Sony may ultimately decide against releasing the device.

The decline of dedicated handheld consoles, aside from Nintendo's continued success, is partly due to the rise of mobile gaming. Despite the PS Vita's popularity, Sony and competitors seemingly saw smartphones as insurmountable competition.

The resurgence of handheld gaming, fueled by devices like the Steam Deck and the enduring popularity of the Nintendo Switch, coupled with advancements in mobile technology, may be influencing Sony's decision.
