Starfield Developer Says Players Are Sick of Long Games

A former Starfield developer, Will Shen, reveals player fatigue with excessively long AAA games. This sentiment suggests a potential shift in player preference towards shorter gaming experiences. Shen, a veteran with credits on titles like Fallout 4 and Fallout 76, observes a saturation point in the market for lengthy games, noting that many players don't complete titles exceeding ten hours. He highlights the importance of game completion for optimal engagement with narrative and overall product.

Shen's comments, shared in an interview with Kiwi Talkz (via Gamespot), indicate a growing segment of players tired of the dozens of hours required by many AAA titles. He cites the success of shorter games as evidence of this trend, using the indie horror game Mouthwashing as an example. The game's brevity, rather than expansive side quests, contributed significantly to its positive reception.

Despite the rising popularity of shorter games, the prevalence of longer titles like Starfield remains. Bethesda's continued support for Starfield with DLC like Shattered Space (2024) and a rumored 2025 expansion demonstrates the ongoing appeal of extensive content. The industry, therefore, appears poised for a period of coexistence between lengthy and shorter gaming experiences.
