If you're a fan of Grand Theft Auto, you'll remember the buzz surrounding GTA 6's initially announced fall 2025 release window. Back in February, I sat down with Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, who confidently expressed his optimism about meeting that timeline. Fast forward three months, and GTA 6 made headlines again—not for its anticipated launch, but for its delay to May 26, 2026.
So, what shifted in those short months? To answer that, I caught up with Zelnick following Take-Two's recent financial results. He explained that as development neared completion, the team at Rockstar Games realized the importance of additional polish to achieve their creative vision without compromise.
“As we approach the final stages of a project aiming for perfection, the necessity—or lack thereof—for further refinement becomes evident,” Zelnick noted. “In this instance, a slight extension allowed us to ensure Rockstar achieved its goals unencumbered. Naturally, I fully backed this decision.”
While the delay impacts Take-Two’s financial projections for the current fiscal year, Zelnick remains optimistic about the future. He highlighted upcoming titles like Gearbox’s Borderlands 4, Hangar 13’s Mafia: The Old Country, and new installments in the NBA 2K and WWE 2K series. “I’m feeling very positive about FY26,” he stated. “Although delays are tough, supporting the team’s pursuit of excellence is paramount.”

With GTA 6 now on track for its new release date, I revisited the question I first posed in February: how confident is Take-Two in hitting the May 26, 2026 deadline? This time, Zelnick’s tone conveyed even greater certainty.
“Historically, when we commit to a specific release date, we’ve typically met it,” he remarked. While he didn’t outright guarantee no further delays, his confidence suggests GTA 6 won’t slip again unless absolutely necessary.
The unveiling of the second GTA 6 trailer and accompanying details has fueled speculation among fans. Some believe Liberty City might feature either at launch or as post-launch DLC. Until then, stay tuned for more updates, including every detail we’ve uncovered so far, a gallery of 70 fresh screenshots, and expert insights on GTA 6’s visual performance on the PS5 Pro.
