Warframe's TennoCon 2024: A Blast from the Past with Warframe: 1999
TennoCon 2024 delivered a spectacular showcase, highlighted by the upcoming Warframe: 1999 update. This massive expansion promises a nostalgic trip back to 1999, complete with a retro aesthetic and a thrilling new storyline.
A prologue quest, "The Lotus Eaters," arrives in August 2024. Reuniting players with a beloved character, this quest sets the stage for the main 1999 update, introducing Sevatgoth Prime and their unique weaponry. Completing "The Lotus Eaters" is a prerequisite for experiencing Warframe: 1999, slated for release in Winter 2024.
Warframe: 1999 plunges players into an alternate 1999 Earth, where a deadly Y2K virus threatens global devastation. The setting is Höllvania, a 90s-inspired city corrupted by Techrot. Players navigate this vibrant yet perilous environment using the new Atomicyles, versatile vehicles capable of bullet jumps, drifts, and even explosive maneuvers. Six heroes, members of the Hex team, lead the charge.
Each Hex member pilots a Protoframe, a Warframe showcasing the human pilot within. Arthur, wielding Excalibur, leads the team, supported by allies like Aoi (Mag) and Quincy (the new CYTE-09 Warframe). CYTE-09 will also be available in the Origin System, sporting a stylish beret.
A stellar cast brings the Hex to life, including Alpha Takahashi, Ben Starr, Melissa Medina, and Amelia Tyler. Players can interact with the characters through an in-game instant messaging system, adding a unique layer of engagement.
Adding to the 90s atmosphere, players will confront a villainous 90s boy band, On-lyne, led by Zeke (voiced by Nick Apostolides). Infected by Technocyte Coda, On-lyne provides catchy musical interludes, with their hit single, "Party of Your Lifetime," available on major streaming platforms.
Significant fashion system upgrades enhance the player experience. Two customizable fashion frame loadouts allow for quick switching, while the introduction of Gemini Skins lets players bring Protoframes like Arthur and Aoi into the Origin system. These skins feature fully voiced lines, adding depth to gameplay.
Beyond Warframe: 1999, Digital Extremes announced a collaboration with THE LINE animation studio for an anime short film, releasing later this year. High-fidelity Heirloom skins for Ember (available now) and Rhino (early 2025) are also on the horizon.
