Nintendo Switch 2 Patent Suggests Joy-Cons Can be Rotated and the Console Played Upside Down

Author : Aurora Update:Mar 16,2025

Nintendo's latest patent hints at a fascinating feature for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2: reversible Joy-Con controllers. As reported by VGC, this patent suggests the new console will utilize gyro mechanics similar to a phone's screen orientation, automatically adjusting the display regardless of how the device is held. This functionality is seemingly enabled by a redesigned Joy-Con attachment system, replacing the original Switch's rails with magnets, allowing for attachment on either side.

While this might seem like a small hardware tweak, it offers significant potential. Players will have the freedom to reposition buttons, the headphone jack, and other elements to suit their preferences. This flexibility could even unlock innovative gameplay mechanics. The patent explicitly states, "The user can use the game system by mounting the right controller and the left controller on the opposite side to the main body device," and further explains the adaptability of the headphone jack placement.

Further details are expected at Nintendo's upcoming Direct event on April 2nd (6am Pacific / 9am Eastern / 2pm UK time). While Nintendo hasn't officially announced a release window, speculation points towards a launch between June and September, fueled by reports of pre-release events extending into June and a statement from Greedfall 2 publisher Nacon suggesting a pre-September release.

The Switch 2 was initially unveiled in January with a brief trailer showcasing backward compatibility and a second USB-C port. Many details remain shrouded in mystery, including the game lineup and the function of a new, unconfirmed Joy-Con button.
