"Switch 2 Fans May Be Disappointed by Next Pokemon Presents"

Summary

  • Don't expect news on Switch 2 Pokemon titles at the next Pokemon Presents on February 27.
  • Leaks suggest a Switch 2 reveal soon, but Pokemon games will apparently stick to the original console for now.
  • The next Pokemon Presents will likely focus on Pokemon Legends: Z-A.

Pokemon fans eager for announcements about Switch 2 Pokemon titles might be disappointed by the upcoming Pokemon Presents scheduled for Thursday, February 27. The franchise has been a staple on Nintendo platforms since its debut on the original Game Boy in the 90s, yet it appears that fans will need to wait longer for the beloved series to make its mark on the Switch 2.

As of now, Nintendo has not officially unveiled the Switch 2. However, the company has confirmed that this next-generation console will be backward compatible with the original Switch, will transfer Nintendo accounts, and is slated for a reveal within the current fiscal year. All other details stem from leaks, which suggest that the Switch 2 will be a significantly enhanced, larger version of the original.

While new Pokemon games will eventually arrive on the Switch 2, fans should temper their expectations for the February 27 Pokemon Presents. According to Jeff Grubb, the event will focus on games in development for the original Switch, which will be playable on the new hardware thanks to its backward compatibility.

Pokemon Presents Not Expected to Have News on Switch 2 Games

The upcoming Pokemon Presents will likely include updates on ongoing live-service titles like Pokemon GO and Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket. Fans are also anticipating news on Pokemon Legends: Z-A, set to release on the original Switch sometime this year. So far, only a brief teaser trailer for Pokemon Legends: Z-A has been released, showcasing the Lumiose City setting, some returning Pokemon, and the return of Mega Evolutions, but not much more. There's also chatter about another main series Pokemon game releasing this year, separate from Pokemon Legends: Z-A and the upcoming Generation 10 titles.

Rumors hint at a new main series game that could be either Pokemon Black and White remakes or another pair of Let's Go games, both expected to launch on the original Switch rather than the Switch 2, if the leaked information proves accurate. If true, it seems the first major Pokemon titles exclusive to the Switch 2 might be the Generation 10 games.

The Pokemon franchise has a history of continuing on older hardware with larger install bases. For instance, Pokemon Black 2 and White 2 were released for the original DS, not the 3DS, and it looks like history might repeat itself. Of course, none of this has been officially confirmed, so fans should tune into the Pokemon Presents on February 27 for the latest updates.
