Seni Tradisional Gordang Sambilan Batak Mandailing

Gordang Sambilan merupakan warisan budaya Batak Mandailing yang kaya akan nilai seni. Kata "Gordang" berarti gendang atau bedug, sementara "Sambilan" berarti sembilan. Sesuai namanya, alat musik ini terdiri dari sembilan buah gendang dengan ukuran dan diameter berbeda, menghasilkan beragam nada yang unik.

Biasanya, enam orang pemain memainkan Gordang Sambilan secara bersamaan. Setiap gendang memiliki peran dan menghasilkan suara yang khas. Gendang terkecil (1 dan 2) berperan sebagai taba-taba, gendang ke-3 sebagai tepe-tepe, gendang ke-4 dan ke-5 sebagai kudong-kudong (dengan gendang ke-5, kudong-kudong nabalik, memiliki karakteristik berbeda), gendang ke-6 sebagai pasilion, dan gendang ke-7, 8, dan 9 sebagai jangat.

Dahulu, Gordang Sambilan hanya dimainkan dalam upacara-upacara sakral.
