Pokémon TCG Launch Faces Scalping, Shortages, and Outages Again

Author : Joseph Update:Apr 24,2025

The latest Pokémon TCG set, Scarlet & Violet - Destined Rivals, was fully unveiled on March 24 and is set to launch starting on May 30, 2025. As expected with highly anticipated releases, the pre-order phase has been tumultuous, with reports of scalpers and store issues already affecting the set's rollout. If you're a seasoned collector, this chaotic launch might come as no surprise.

Several factors contribute to the high demand for Destined Rivals. Notably, it marks the exciting return of Trainer's Pokémon cards, reminiscent of classics like Brock's Sandslash or Rocket's Mewtwo. These cards offer a unique way to integrate beloved Trainers into the gameplay, adding a nostalgic charm that appeals to both old and new fans. Additionally, the set focuses on Team Rocket, the iconic villainous team from Pokémon's first generation, further fueling its popularity. Similar to the successful Prismatic Evolutions set earlier this year, Destined Rivals promises to be a fan-favorite.

When pre-orders opened, the Pokémon Center website quickly became overwhelmed, leaving many fans unable to secure an Elite Trainer Box (ETB). These boxes, packed with cards and other accessories, are a popular choice for those eager to dive into a new set. Unfortunately, scalpers were quick to capitalize on the situation, listing pre-orders of the Pokémon Center-specific ETB on eBay for several hundred dollars, far exceeding the typical $54.99 price tag. Joe Merrick of Serebii shared his frustration after waiting in queue for hours, highlighting the disheartening shift towards treating the Pokémon TCG as a financial investment rather than a hobby.

This situation mirrors past issues with sets like Prismatic Evolutions and Blooming Waters 151, where high demand led to shortages. The Pokémon Company has responded to the current situation by stating that more inventory of the Destined Rivals ETB will be available later in the year, according to a FAQ on PokéBeach. Despite this, some fans have reported cancellations of their ETB orders, further complicating the situation.

The soaring demand and popularity of the Pokémon TCG are evident, yet these issues are overshadowing the joy of the hobby for many who simply want to open packs and play the game. While Pokémon TCG Pocket offers a virtual alternative, the frustration for those seeking physical cards remains palpable. A visit to your local store's card aisle would likely reveal the challenges of securing these packs amidst such high demand. With such exciting releases, it's hoped that solutions to these problems will emerge soon, allowing fans to enjoy the game they love without the added stress.
