Mortal Kombat 1's development chief, Ed Boon, recently stirred excitement among fans by revealing a sneak peek of the upcoming guest character T-1000 Terminator's Fatality on social media. Alongside this reveal, Boon hinted at the prospect of "future DLC" for the game.
Celebrating the launch of another guest character, Conan the Barbarian, Boon announced that Mortal Kombat 1 has surpassed five million sales, an increase from the previously reported four million. He also shared a short video clip of one of T-1000's Fatalities, which cleverly recreates a memorable scene from Terminator 2 where the T-1000 uses a truck during a chase.
Boon's tweet, which included the phrase "With Conan getting into player’s hands, we are excited to keep trucking forward with future DLC!", has sparked speculation among the Mortal Kombat community. While it's clear that this comment relates to the T-1000's upcoming release, many fans are hopeful that it signals the addition of more DLC characters beyond the current set.
T-1000 Terminator marks the final character to be added to Mortal Kombat 1 as part of the Khaos Reigns expansion, following other notable fighters such as Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, Ghostface, and Conan the Barbarian. Amid discussions about the game's sales performance, there has been ongoing curiosity about whether NetherRealm Studios plans to introduce a third set of DLC characters or a Kombat Pack 3.
Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of NetherRealm, continues to show strong support for the Mortal Kombat franchise. In November, CEO David Zaslav highlighted that the company intends to focus on four key titles, with Mortal Kombat being one of them. Furthermore, in September, Boon reassured fans that NetherRealm had committed to supporting Mortal Kombat 1 for an extended period, despite having decided on their next project three years earlier.
Although many anticipate that NetherRealm's next game might be the third installment in their DC fighting game series, Injustice, neither the studio nor Warner Bros. has confirmed this yet. The Injustice series began with Injustice: Gods Among Us in 2013, followed by Injustice 2 in 2017. Instead of alternating between the two franchises as initially expected, NetherRealm chose to release Mortal Kombat 11 in 2019 and then the soft reboot, Mortal Kombat 1, in 2023.
In a June 2023 interview with IGN, Boon discussed the decision to prioritize another Mortal Kombat game over an Injustice sequel, citing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the studio's transition to the Unreal Engine 4 from Unreal Engine 3, which was used for Mortal Kombat 11. Boon emphasized the team's commitment to safety and their careful approach to game development during the challenging times brought on by the pandemic.
When asked about the future of the Injustice franchise, Boon was clear: "Not at all," indicating that the door remains open for future Injustice games.
