Loyal viewers were heartbroken when Paramount recently axed the second season of Dexter: Original Sin, merely four months after renewing the spinoff series. However, creator and showrunner Clyde Phillips shares this disappointment, openly expressing his frustration with how the cancellation unfolded.
“I received a difficult call that night after they had already picked up the show,” Phillips shared on an episode of Dissecting Dexter. “I let all the writers and actors know, only for them to pull back shortly after picking up Resurrection, which wasn’t unexpected. The handling was poor, and I’m not pleased with it.”
The cancellation followed leadership changes at Paramount triggered by its major merger with Skydance. While some fans are campaigning for a reversal, Phillips remains skeptical that the studio will change its mind.
The decision to cancel Original Sin entirely signals a reduced scope for the Dexter franchise. According to Phillips, before the Skydance deal, Paramount aimed to build a Yellowstone-style empire with him serving as the central creative force and public face, similar to Taylor Sheridan’s role in his own universe. This vision included a detailed roadmap for future projects, but most of those plans have now been scrapped. Currently, only Dexter: Resurrection survives this restructuring; it is expected to return for a second season, though official confirmation is still pending.
