Dragon Quest XII remains under development, with updates to be shared gradually, according to series creator Yuji Horii. During a recent livestream with his radio show group, KosoKoso Hōsō Kyoku, Horii confirmed that the Square Enix development team is diligently working on the project.
This marks the first update since May 2024, following the announcements of the passing of Akira Toriyama and Koichi Sugiyama, key figures in the Dragon Quest franchise. It also follows the departure of lead producer Yu Miyake to head Square Enix's mobile game division.
Recent restructuring at Square Enix and a lack of updates had sparked fan concerns about the game's potential cancellation. However, Horii's statement reassures fans that Dragon Quest XII is still actively in production.

Announced as part of the series' 35th-anniversary celebration, Dragon Quest XII will be the first main series entry since 2017's Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age. The recent success of the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, which surpassed 2 million copies sold, further underscores the franchise's ongoing popularity.
