George R.R. Martin, author of A Song of Ice and Fire, has declared his enthusiastic approval of the upcoming Game of Thrones prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, calling it "as faithful an adaptation as one could reasonably expect."
In a recent blog post, Martin revealed that HBO has completed filming for the six-episode series, which is slated for release later this year, possibly in the fall. Unlike his previous experience with House of the Dragon, Martin expressed significant fondness for this adaptation.
He stated, "Having viewed all six episodes (the final two in rough cuts), I was thoroughly captivated. Dunk and Egg have always held a special place in my heart, and the actors portraying them are exceptionally talented. The entire cast delivers outstanding performances. You'll be particularly impressed by the Laughing Storm and Tanselle Too-Tall."
Martin emphasized the show's fidelity to The Hedge Knight, the first Dunk and Egg novella: "It's as true to the source material as one could hope for (and you all know my famously reasonable approach to such matters)."
However, he cautioned viewers expecting non-stop action. "While there's a thrilling, large-scale fight sequence, this series lacks dragons, massive battles, and White Walkers. It's a character-driven story, focusing on themes of duty, honor, and chivalry."
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms stars Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and Dexter Sol Ansell as Prince Aegon Targaryen (Egg). While still several months away from its premiere, HBO has already unveiled several images and a short teaser trailer.
Martin concluded his post with a playful reminder of his ongoing work on The Winds of Winter, stating his intention to adapt the subsequent Dunk and Egg stories, The Sworn Sword and The Village Hero, once that novel is complete.
