NPIXEL has announced the closure of Gran Saga, concluding its brief international journey. The game will officially shut down on April 30th, 2025, with in-app purchases and downloads already disabled.
Gran Saga enjoyed a successful launch in Japan in 2021 but struggled to replicate that success globally after its debut in November 2024. The game's international run lasted only six months before the decision to terminate was made.
Financial instability and the challenge of sustaining a viable service in the fiercely competitive global market appear to be the primary reasons for the shutdown. Despite its initial appeal, Gran Saga couldn't secure a significant player base amidst established competitors in the genre. New games need to offer something revolutionary to stand out, and unfortunately, Gran Saga's early success in Japan did not translate internationally.
This closure is part of a larger trend of gacha RPGs facing shutdowns. Just last month, My Hero Academia: The Strongest Hero ceased operations, joining a list of others that couldn't withstand the market's saturation. Players often stick to familiar games, making it tough for new or niche titles to maintain long-term viability.
For those who made recent purchases, refunds can be requested until May 30th, though this may not be possible if the items have already been used or due to other store policies.
