DC Studios co-chief James Gunn addresses online criticism regarding Superman's expression during a flight sequence in a recently released TV spot.
A new 30-second promotional video showcased previously unseen footage, including Lex Luthor near the Fortress of Solitude and Superman performing a barrel roll during high-speed flight. This flying sequence sparked debate, with some viewers commenting on Superman's seemingly unnatural facial stillness while his hair and cape moved dynamically. Speculation ranged from technical issues to poor CGI.
However, Gunn clarified on Threads that the shot contains "absolutely zero CG in his face," attributing the appearance to the close-up wide-angle lens used and the real-world location filming in Svalbard, Norway. He confirmed both the background and Corenswet's performance were entirely practical.
Despite Gunn's explanation, online discussion persists, with comparisons drawn to similar flying scenes in Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Regardless of the debate surrounding this brief clip, anticipation for the Superman film remains high. The film, the inaugural entry in the DCU's "Gods and Monsters" chapter, is slated for release on July 11, 2025.
